Agency FOIA websites are often a requester’s first stop when looking for information about filing a FOIA request. However, a vast majority of FOIA websites OGIS reviewed lacked at least one piece of information needed to navigate the FOIA process, according to our latest report, Agency Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Websites.
Earlier this year, OGIS reviewed FOIA websites for 21 Cabinet-level and independent agencies (including the National Archives and Records Administration) against 10 benchmarks that OGIS identified as most necessary for requesters to navigate the FOIA process.
The assessment, which has four findings and three recommendations, follows the 2021 assessment of agency FOIA websites that OGIS published in 2022 to fulfill FOIA Advisory Committee Recommendation No. 2020-01.
The updated assessment helps OGIS fulfill its statutory mandate to review FOIA policies, procedures and compliance, and identify procedures and methods for improving compliance, 5 U.S.C. § 552(h)(2).
