On Tuesday, November 10, OGIS will host a virtual event, Accessing Veterans Records: A Multi-Agency Forum, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. ET. The virtual forum will be livestreamed on the National Archives YouTube Channel.
Navigating federal veterans and military-service records can be confusing. Records may be held by different agencies or NARA offices depending on the type and age of the record, and the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) is not always the appropriate or easiest way to obtain them.
This forum will bring together subject-matter experts and representatives from multiple federal agencies who will explain the veterans and military-service records it holds, how those records can be requested, and common issues or misconceptions requesters encounter. In addition, information will be provided to attendees on how veterans, researchers, families and service organizations can obtain these records.
Confirmed speakers include:
- Virginia E. Burke, Chief, FOIA Division, Oversight and Compliance Directorate, Office of the Director of Administration and Management, Department of War
- Theresa Fitzgerald, Director, Personnel Records Division, National Personnel Records Center, National Archives and Records Administration
- Anastasia Kakel, Acting Director, FOIA Service, Compliance, Risk, and Remediation, Office of Information and Technology, Department of Veterans Affairs
- Scott Levins, Director, National Personnel Records Center, National Archives and Records Administration
A moderated discussion will follow panelists’ individual presentations.
